Can this work?
The half-hectare layout can hold one naturally ventilated 10 m × 30 m treated-timber greenhouse, a simple borehole and 5,000 L tank, a two-room worker cottage, a separate 4 m × 6 m grading and storage shed, and a 1,000-plant leafy-vegetable garden. The farm needs close daily management and reliable buyers.
Main working assumptions
- 840 tomato plants in six double-row beds with timber and twine supports.
- Peak water use of about 4,715 L a day. The system must deliver at least 0.8 m³ an hour to the tank for about seven daylight pumping hours.
- One resident grower or caretaker, owner control of money and buyers, and short-term help at planting and harvest.
- Covo and rape have a separate drip valve. The greenhouse gets water first.
What the budget shows
The planning total is about US$26,918, excluding land. This includes about US$3,700 to run the first crop. At an average tomato price of US$0.75/kg, the model leaves only about US$657 after annual running costs. A price of about US$1.02/kg is needed to cover all modelled costs before finance, tax and owner pay.
Check these points before building
- Get written direction on land use, the borehole and environmental requirements.
- Test the borehole in the dry season and test the water in a laboratory.
- Ask a competent person to check the timber, anchoring, wind strength and ventilation.
- Find buyers and record their grade, crate, price, collection and payment terms.
- Confirm current farm-worker grades and employment terms.
What the complete Pack includes
